The last couple of years I have been spoiled a little more around my birthday than I used to. Instead of giving something material – I already have everything…. I want less, not more. See my post about The Minimalists – M and I have been giving each other little getaways for our birthdays. Quality time.
Since last weekend I am officially 36 years old, which sounds so much older than 35. The upside is that it was quality time-time. And the destination is always a surprise. After getting on the train (and packing my rain coat) I still had no clue. I asked for a few hints before I guessed right: The Wadden, or the Frisian Islands, in the north west of The Netherlands. We have 5 and I – shame on me – had never been there. Vlieland, here we come!
There were hardly any people and all the predicted rain only fell for an hour or so. We cycled around the island for a day, took a long hike through the woods and along the beach the next day. So much nature, so little concrete. It’s small and there’s not much to do but enjoy the nature and the quiet. I loved it! And then I’m not even talking about the fantastic restaurants we ate at (Armhuis and Zuiver). I highly recommend the last one!
And if all that wasn’t enough, on Saturday we bought a copy of the Algemeen Dagblad with AD Magazine in it, because… my illustration of the IJsselmeer map was in it! I always love to see my illustrations in print. It feels so much different (not always better, though) than seeing it on your screen. It is a modern map of the IJsselmeer, but with a vintage touch, based on a map from 1914 of ‘De Zuiderzee’ by Jac. P. Thijsse. That map is also published in the magazine.
Here are some more photos of lovely Vlieland.
